Bushfire Evacuation Planning

Health & Safety > Bushfire Evacuation Planning

Authorised by Chief Executive Officer

Revised Date: 11 February 2020

At some Kyeema sites and the homes of rural participants there is a potential for a bushfire risk.

Managers at each work site assess whether evacuation is needed in the event of an approaching bushfire. Sometimes evacuation is not the best option.

Managers and team leaders are to be alert to emergency services notifications, announcements and website information to be informed of the location of potential risk to Kyeema participants and staff.

Procedure

1.     Phone parents and carers to see if they are able to pick up participants who do not live in bushfire prone areas.

2.     Liaise with parents/carers of those living in areas outside the town boundaries and decide whether it is safe for them to go home. This will depend on the location and status of the fire.

3.     If a bushfire is threatening any worksite, transport participants to the Portland Library.

4.     Continue efforts to communicate with parents/carers about the whereabouts of the participant and to arrange safe transport home.

5.     Make arrangements for accommodation for any rural participants for whom it is unsafe to go home due to having to travel through a fire-risk area.

6.     Any staff who need to ensure the safety of their own family or property are to be relieved of their duties so that they can attend to their personal responsibilities.
