Overview

Kyeema Support Services aims to provide programs that are consistent with health promotion values, promoting an environment that encourages participants and staff to incorporate healthy practices into support activities.

 

Guiding Principles

The agency Health Promotion procedures have three guiding principles

 

Inclusion

Advocating towards increasing the participation of people with a disability in community life by helping to create linkages to relevant and accessible community health promoting activities and services.

 

Partnership and Shared Responsibility

Implementation of the agency’s Health Promotion Policy will result from collaborative partnerships involving external sectors. This reflects a shared responsibility in improving health and health outcomes for the agency, its participants and staff.  The agency’s Health Promotion Policy will support the development of partnerships to strengthen and foster partnerships with other agencies to share resources and give participants “access to information, encouragement and supports that maximize their participation in the community”.

  

Procedures

Overview and Rationale

Health has an important effect on mental, emotional and social wellbeing, as well as ones’ capacity to participate in family and community life.   Kyeema aims to assist participants to improve and maintain their health through various health promoting practices.

 

Safe Physical Activity

−        Encourage activities and programs for all ages that involve all levels of physical activities e.g.: low, moderate and high

−        Endeavour to provide a range of internal and external opportunities for participants to enjoy, including use of exercise physiologists or personal trainers.

−        All participants will be encouraged to bring their own water bottle at all training and exercise programs. 

Food and Catering

−        Kyeema understands and recognizes the importance of good nutrition and the role it plays in maintaining and improving health.

−        Kyeema will encourage healthy eating behaviour for all participants and staff.

−        Where food is available at functions and activities, healthy options will be encouraged.

−        Kyeema cooking groups will support healthy eating practices

−        Appropriate training will be available for paid staff and volunteers who provide food e.g.: Hygiene for Food Handlers.

−        Kyeema will give preference to those food companies/caterers, which provide healthy food alternatives.

Tobacco

−        All indoor and designated outdoor environments, under the control of Kyeema will be 100% smoke free.

−        All official functions (including dinners, presentations, fund–raising events, meetings, and social occasions) will be 100% smoke free.

−        Any person, either employed by or representing the organisation in any capacity will refrain from smoking whilst acting in an official capacity.

 

Medications

−        Participants are supported to take medications as prescribed.
