Description of Work:

Using a Bandsaw

Potential hazards:

i Saw may grab and flick the piece in operators hands

i Contact with moving blade

i Flying chips and airborne dust

i Eye injuries

i Noise

PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT REQUIRED

PRE-OPERATION

ü Locate and ensure you are familiar with all machine operations and controls

ü Ensure all guards are fitted, secure and functional. Do not operate if guards are missing or faulty

ü Check workspaces and walkways to ensure no slip/trip hazards are present

ü Ensure a push stick is available

ü Lower the blade guide and guard to full effect

ü Star the dust extraction unit before using the machine

 

SAFE OPERATION

ü Keep hands away from the blade and cutting area

ü Feed the work piece forward evenly and hold it firmly on the table

ü Use a push stick when feeding material past the blade

ü Before making adjustments, switch off the saw and bring the machine to a complete standstill

ü Stop the machine before attempting to back the work away from the blade

ü Stop the saw immediately if the blade develops a ‘click’ and report it to your supervisor

 

POST-OPERATION

ü Switch off the machine when work is completed

ü Reset all guards to a fully closed position

ü Leave the machine in a safe, clear and tidy state

 

DON’T

û Do not use faulty equipment. Immediately report any suspect machinery

û Do not attempt to cut very small items

û Do not cut cylindrical or irregular stock

û Never leave the machine running unattended

û Do not force a wide bade on small radius cut. Use relief cuts when cutting sharp curves
