DO NOT use this machine unless you have been instructed

in its safe use and operation and have been given permission

 

Description of Work:

Using a Chainsaw

Potential hazards:

i Kick-back

i Push-back

i Pull-in

i Petrol fumes when refuelling

i Back and shoulder strain

i Trip hazards

i Noise

i Rotating chain

i Flying debris

i Hair/clothing caught in moving machine parts

PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT REQUIRED

PRE-OPERATION

ü Locate and ensure you are familiar with all machine operations and controls

ü Ensure the machine is clean so you can see any loose, worn or defective parts and other safety hazards

ü Inspect fuel lines, tank and area around carburettor for fuel leaks. Do not operate if any leaks are found

ü Check the effectiveness of chain brakes and operating controls

ü Ensure all guards are fitted, secure and functional. Do not operate if guards are missing or faulty

ü Check condition of the anti-vibration mountings of the handles

ü Ensure chain is sharp and correctly tensioned

ü Wear the appropriate PPE

ü Ensure all other workers are clear of the immediate work area

 

SAFE OPERATION

ü Start the chainsaw on the ground

ü Ensure no obstructions are present, particularly near the tip of the guide bar

ü Ensure the chain brake is applied

ü Place your right foot through the rear handle and place your left hand on the front handle

ü Operate the starter with the right hand

ü Keep a firm grip on the chainsaw with both hands and the thumb of the hand holding the front handle wrapped around the handle

ü Maintain a proper balance and secure footing

ü Start the cut with the saw chain rotating at full speed and the spiked bumper in contact with the wood

ü Be aware of the guide bar nose at all times when the saw chain is in motion

ü Pay full attention to the operation and be alert for movement of the material being cut

ü Be alert to situations that may cause material to pinch the top of the saw chain.

ü Apply chain brake when saw is at rest

ü Allow the unit to cool before refuelling

 

POST-OPERATION

ü Remove any foreign material from in and around motor and guards

ü Keep the work area and implement shed in a clean and tidy condition

ü Ensure equipment is returned to storage area after use

 

DON’T

û Do not use faulty equipment. Report suspect machinery immediately

û Never use a chainsaw over shoulder height
