Description of Work:

Using hand tools

Potential hazards:

i Muscle strain - poor posture /repetition

i Trip hazard

i Muscle strain - manual handling

i Stabbing with harp prongs

PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT REQUIRED

PRE-OPERATION

ü Obtain appropriate tools and materials for the task and transport to area e.g. spade, fork, rake, secateurs, lopper, hedge shears, pruning saw

ü Sun protection

ü Visually inspect area(s) where work to be undertaken for any hazards and removed if necessary

ü Read any labels

 

SAFE OPERATION

ü Use spade to dig holes

ü Squat/kneel to plant any new plants

ü Use watering can or hose to water new plants

ü Lay rake on ground with tines facing down, not up

ü Lay fork on ground with tines facing down, not up

ü If pruning ensure blades are sharp enough for task

ü USE WHEELBARROW TO TRANSPORT HEAVY ITEMS

ü Avoid working in the middle of a hot day where possible or seek shade

ü Adopt safe work postures

ü Use correct manual handling techniques.

ü Vary tasks

ü Always wear suitable PPE

 

POST-OPERATION

ü Erect barricades if necessary to limit access

ü Ensure no trip hazards exist

ü Wash hands

ü Ensure equipment is returned to storage area after use

 

DON’T

û Do not use faulty equipment.  Report suspect tools immediately.

û Do not lay rake or fork down with the tines facing up as they can hit a worker in the face if the handle is stood on
