in its safe use and operation and have been given permission

 

Description of Work:

Using a Hedge Trimmer

Potential hazards:

i Repetition of movement

i Burns from hot exhaust

i Insect bites/stings

i Petrol fumes when refuelling

i Awkward posture

i Back and shoulder strain

i Trip hazards

i Noise

i Duration of task vibration

PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT REQUIRED

PRE-OPERATION

ü Locate and ensure you are familiar with all machine operations and controls

ü Ensure the machine is clean so you can see any loose, worn or defective parts and other safety hazards

ü Visually inspect hedge trimmer before use. Check that the trimmer is in good operating order. Make sure blades are sharp, lubricated and move freely

ü Check the motor runs smoothly, the auto-switch mechanism is working correctly and that safety guards are in place

ü Perform any prestart checks as described in the product manual. Do not use if any faults are detected

ü Check for fuel leaks and check fuel mix. Use fresh fuel and check the air filter

ü Wear the appropriate PPE

ü Ensure all other workers are clear of the immediate work area

 

SAFE OPERATION

ü Maintain hedges below shoulder level to avoid overhead or ladder work

ü Identify areas of uneven ground and take extra care with footing to avoid slip/trips/falls. Do not work on slippery, wet or unstable surfaces

ü Inspect the work area and remove foreign objects, check for electrical wires, garden stakes, water pipes, etc. Take care around spikey/thorny plants and plants with irritating sap. Manage insect pests appropriately (spiders, wasps, ants etc.)

ü Ensure activity will not pose a threat to yourself, other people, surrounding buildings, vehicles and/or animals

ü Plan regular rest breaks. Alternate tasks to reduce muscle fatigue and maintain concentration

ü Always maintain two hands on trimmer when in use

ü Pay full attention to the operation and be alert for movement of the material being cut

 

POST-OPERATION

ü Allow the unit to cool before refuelling

ü Once the unit is cool, clean down and check unit before returning to storage

ü Remove any foreign material from in and around motor and guards

ü Keep the work area and implement shed in a clean and tidy condition

ü Ensure equipment is returned to storage area after use
