Description of Work:

Using a Pole Pruner

i Kick-back

i Flying debris

i Petrol fumes when refuelling

i Rotating chain

i Back and shoulder strain

i Trip hazards

i Noise

i Falling limbs

PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT REQUIRED

BEWARE OF POWER LINES

PRE-OPERATION

ü Prior to use, conduct safety inspection of tools, including chain, shaft, exhaust guard, throttle and start/stop switch. Ensure chainsaw maintenance as per manufacturer recommendations. Ensure spark arrestor fitted and functional

ü Check the effectiveness of operating controls

ü Ensure safety guards and other safety devices are fitted, secure and functioning

ü Check condition of the anti-vibration mountings of the handles

ü Ensure chain is sharp and correctly tensioned

ü Refuel in a well-ventilated area, ensure machine is off and cool when refuelling. Only allow fuel in approved containers. Ensure a fire extinguisher is present and serviceable. Wear gloves

 

SAFE OPERATION

ü Visual inspection of tree and surrounding area prior to cutting

ü When starting the chainsaw on the ground ensure no obstructions are present, particularly near the tip of the guide bar

ü Keep a firm grip on the chainsaw with both hands, with the thumb of the hand holding the front handle wrapped around the handle

ü Use your stance to maintain a proper balance and secure footing when operating the chainsaw

ü Start the cut with the saw chain rotating at full speed

ü Be aware of the guide bar nose at all times when the chain is in motion

ü Use ropes/rigging to control branches if they are likely to cause a hazard as they drop

ü Pay full attention to the operation and be alert for movement of the material being cut

ü Use safety barriers and/or a safety observer if there is any risk of someone entering the drop zone

ü Allow a hot chainsaw to cool before refilling the fuel tank

 

POST-OPERATION

ü Remove any foreign material from in and around motor and guards once cooled

ü Keep the work area and implement shed in a clean and tidy condition

ü Ensure equipment is returned to storage area after use

 

DON’T

û Do not use faulty equipment.  Report suspect machinery immediately

û Do not operate this equipment from a ladder
