DO NOT use this machine unless you have been instructed

in its safe use and operation and have been given permission

 

Description of Work:

Using a Ride-On Mower

Potential hazards:

i Rapidly rotating cutting blades

i Petrol fumes when refuelling

i Flying debris

i Back and shoulder strain

i Trip hazards

i Noise

PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT REQUIRED

PRE-OPERATION

ü Ensure all safety devices, guards, switches, and shields are fitted, secure and functional

ü Check seat and seat belt in good condition and function correctly

ü Make any adjustments to suit user (e.g. seat)

ü Visually check cutting blades are secure and in good condition

ü Ensure that any belt, pneumatic and hydraulic mechanisms are in sound condition

ü Ensure all accessories and attachments securely fitted, including ROPS (rollover protection structure)

ü Ensure that all electrical switches (including seat pressure stop) are functioning

ü Wear the appropriate PPE

ü Refuel the mower away from any possible sources of ignition

ü Ensure all other workers are clear of the immediate work area

 

SAFE OPERATION

ü When you start up the machine, listen for unusual noises or vibrations

ü Keep hands, feet and loose clothing away from all moving parts

ü Clear the area of debris that may be thrown

ü Watch for ejected material. Ensure no person or animal is endangered when operating equipment

ü Maintain a proper balance and secure footing

ü Operate at a slow speed slow enough to keep control over unexpected hazards

ü Continually monitor ground condition, adjust mower speed and/or seat suspension to suit

ü Travel up/down slope rather than across, taking extra care on steep slopes. Do not mow slopes of greater than 15 degrees

ü Ensure motor is stopped and allowed to cool before refuelling

ü Refuel only in a well-ventilated area away from possible ignition sources

ü Never leave mower running unattended

 

POST-OPERATION

ü Park on even ground

ü Stop mower and shift gear to park position

ü Raise and secure cutting blades

ü Lock parking brake

ü Stop engine and remove keys

ü Clean away any foreign material and debris from mower

ü Record any maintenance in equipment maintenance record

ü Remove any foreign material from in and around engine

ü Ensure equipment is returned to storage area after use

 

DON’T

û Do not use faulty equipment.  Report suspect machinery immediately

û Never carry passengers

û Avoid mowing in wet conditions due to lack of traction

û Do not use in close proximity to other workers
