Description of Work:

Using a Router

Potential hazards:

i Entanglement and entrapment

i Pinch, crush and squash points

i Dust and fumes

i Eye injuries

i Electrical components

i Manual handling

PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT REQUIRED

PRE-OPERATION

ü Locate the router in a suitable location for safe operation

ü Lock the wheels on the base of the router to prevent movement

ü Locate and ensure you are familiar with the operation of the ON/OFF and Emergency Stop controls

ü Ensure that all guards and safety devices are in position and secured

ü Use only materials that are free of defects

ü Ensure router cutting bit size conforms to specifications.  The machine must be isolated while any adjustments are made to the cutter head

ü Ensure all cutters are sharp and free of resin build up or wear

ü Fit and adjust the dust collector shroud (where fitted) correctly for maximum efficiency and start dust extractor before operating machine

ü Be aware of any other personnel in the immediate vicinity and ensure the area is clear before using this equipment

 

SAFE OPERATION

ü Before making adjustments switch off and bring the machine to a complete standstill

ü Feeding must be against the direction of rotation and held firmly against the fence

ü Deep cuts should not be attempted

ü Feed work slowly into the cutter

ü Jigs, fixtures and templates should be used wherever possible

 

POST-OPERATION

ü On completion, isolate all switches

ü Leave machine and floor in a safe, clean and tidy state

û Never leave the machine running unattended
