Smoking Guidelines for Staff at Kyeema's Residential Services

Home and Living > Smoking Guidelines for Staff at Kyeema’s Residential Services

Authorised by Chief Executive Officer

Issue Date: 16 January 2024

These guidelines relate to

-       Short Term Accommodation stays at Ameeyk

-       Cabin Stays

-       Palmer St houses

-       Other SIL properties Kyeema manages, short term or long term

Scope: This procedure is for staff and does not apply to participants.

It is recognised that some workers may feel the need to smoke while on shifts, especially longer ones.

We ask workers to respect some guidelines that consider:

-       The laws regarding smoking

-       Good participant supervision

-       Role modelling to participants and young workers

-       Health

-       Hygiene

-       Fairness to other (non-smoking) workers

1. Smoking is not allowed inside any Kyeema building. Please do not smoke in the street outside any of our properties – each place will have an external area that is a designated smoking area. If the support is taking place at a rented accommodation location please find a suitable place to smoke that is out of the way.

2. Participants who require full one-to-one supervision must not be left unsupervised.

3. Be very conscious that you are a role model to participants of any age and to younger workers. Try hard not to allow child participants to see you smoking.

4. Ensure participants are not subject to passive smoking.

5. Clean up cigarette butts and empty ash trays.

6. Where a non-smoking co-worker is required to step in and back the smoker up for the duration of the smoke break, ensure work is fairly reciprocated in the shift to avoid the perception of unfairness of work load.
