We are situated in 191 Wellington Road, Portland at the same location as Portland Aluminium’s Salmon House (see map).
Hours of Work:
Seawinds staff start work at 9:30am Work experience participants may start later if required by prior arrangement
Morning Tea 11.00am – 11:15am
Lunch 1:00pm – 1:45pm
Finish 4:300pm
Working Clothes / Uniform:
All new employees should wear a shirt with long sleeves, work pants or jeans and work boots if possible. A T-shirt is optional for the warmer weather. If working outside all employees are encouraged to wear a hat and to apply sunscreen.
If participant does not have steel capped work books; sturdy leather boots or leather sneakers are acceptable.
Safety Equipment:
When working in conditions that require ear or eye protection; the appropriate equipment will be supplied. Gloves must be worn when dealing with potting mixes, these are supplied.
Hat and sunscreen are available.
Location of Facilities:
The toilets are located at the rear of the Seawinds workshop (access from outside). There are tea and coffee making facilities available in the crib room along with a fridge and microwave oven and sandwich toaster
Restricted Areas:
Seawinds employees are restricted from entering P.A. office areas unless accompanied by a staff member
Pay Details:
Fortnightly wages will be paid via direct payroll crediting scheme so appropriate form needs to be completed prior to commencement.
Safety:
On first day an induction will be carried out. This will involve the following (and continue through the vocational training program).
Safe use and handling of trolleys (loading and unloading)
Safe lifting and moving of nursery equipment and plants
Safe use of signs when working
Wearing of safety aids – gloves, earplugs, steel cap boots, block out, hats etc.
• Safe use of equipment and appliances (fire extinguisher, gerni machine, electric leads).
• Personal safety moving about the nursery while working
• Evacuation area and procedure
• Location of fist aid
• Emergency phone numbers etc.
• Location of toilets
• Location of restricted areas.
• Awareness of snakes, spiders etc.
• Awareness of Program Managers knowledge of first aid.
The aim of the induction is to train new staff in the full running of Seawinds Nursery, over a period of 2 weeks.
Some of these items below will be tasks that may take months for new staff to be able to have experience at.
So we do not expect staff to fulfill these items- as it may take months to be able to have the opportunity to experience.
Part A
• On site at Seawinds spend time with new Staff explaining Kyeema’s aims, visions and policies.
• Make familiar Kyeema policies and manuals available for new staff to read or browse.
• Briefly explain the Kyeema set up with Day programs and Supported Employment, and programs provided for employees and Participants at both areas, i.e. Vocational training; Employee exchange program; Farm work experience; off site work experience.
• Work through SEAWINDS NURSERY DAILY PROCEDURE folder. This folder contains information on the complete running of Seawinds, as a dual role, Nursery and Program for Kyeema
• Contents of folder… Meetings to attend; reports to be written; Employees attendance; Step by step procedure for obtaining orders from Portland Aluminium and landowners; Payments procedure; Expenditure; Budgeting; New employee process, Work Experience; Contact with Centre link; All forms required for streamline operation. O.H. & S; CQI; etc.
• Work through the S.N. daily procedure folder, explaining the procedures, referring to other folders and filing contents where appropriate, to show completed forms etc.
• This process may take up to 3 hours.
Part B
• Give practical training session on elements of the daily procedures. eg. Writing up cash or cheque payments on a daily summary sheet. E-mail weekly attendance to Administration for weekly wages; Typing or writing orders for landowners.
• Allow the new staff to actually perform task that they will be required to complete.
• Go through as many administration tasks as possible to allow new staff to feel confident with work place requirements.
• Give the new staff time on site with employees, as an operational Nursery and program, so they can experience the group dynamics and practical running on a daily basis.
• Involve the new staff in various meetings, to show the different requirements needed.
• Allow the new staff to become acquainted with employees and group dynamics.
• Allow new staff to meet as many employees and staff from Both Supported Employment sites- Seawinds Nursery and Windward Industry.
• Allow new staff to meet and be acquainted with Portland Aluminium staff and policies.
