Kyeema Support Services Inc. (Kyeema) believes work experience should broaden and enhance the individual’s abilities and interests. Participants will benefit from experiencing a variety of work related programs to encourage informed decisions about work, and possible jobs / careers.
Aim
The key aim of the work experience program is to introduce them to a genuine work environment, helping them to gain an insight as to what will be expected of them if they are able to gain employment; for some, this is there first experience in the work place.
Some work experience participants will require additional support. This may come from Kyeema Respite & Independent Living Programs (KRIL), their Individual Support Packages, or another funding body.
We aim to promote:
• A strong work ethics and expected behaviours in an open employment situation.
• Practice in focusing on a task for extended periods.
• Doing the task that is requested of them (whether it is what they want to do or not; but what needs to be done.)
• Encouragement to work to the best of their ability and aim for the demonstrated standard.
• Punctuality.
• Adherence to allocated break times.
• Responsibility of personal property.
•OH&S.
• No tomfoolery of mucking about in work times.
• Normal industrial laws, and on site requirements apply.
The expectation will be that the support workers does not do the task for the participant, but works along side the participant setting an example, monitoring their progress and provide support and encouragement to the participant to maintain or reach the standard of task as demonstrated by the on-site staff or leading hand.
Support staff may be asked to supervise other employees while staff works with the participant.
When a new person comes into the worksite or program the normal working group’s dynamics are affected; this can be exhibited by elevated behaviours, showing off, attention seeking or shyness.
The participants support staff should assist staff to control and address these behaviours of all persons not only their participant as this can show a very misleading example to the vocation participants as to how one can behave in the workplace.
In extreme cases this can affect the individual’s future work prospects.
Many current business service employees have gained permanent employment through this program so it is very important to establish the correct perspective.
In a workplace, staff are required to plan, monitor, supervise, control production, direct employees, achieve tasks in a timely way and in Seawinds’ case run a busy retail / wholesale nursery so the assistance of work experience support staff is very much appreciated.
